Icing tests with running helicopter engine
Due to the size and high cooling capacity of the entire system, the Icing Wind Tunnel offers the only opportunity in the world to test engines up to 1800 HP at full throttle.
This is particularly significant because ice accretion can have a substantial influence on the engine performance and therefore realistic conclusions can only be drawn when the engine is in operation.
In addition, the Take Off project HIS has shown how to successfully carry out icing tests on entire helicopters: the Icing Wind Tunnel Vienna becomes the largest of its kind in the world. In 2015, the first icing tests were carried out on drones with a wing span of more than 3 meters.
