IceDrip

Aircraft anti-icing and de-icing through assemblies of conducting varnish and functional coatings

Short Description

Current trends in aviation are strongly leading the way to high-efficiency electro-thermal ice protection systems. Such systems are being investigated for a number of years by several partners of the current consortium.

The most promising approach so far is the combination of a continuous thermal anti-icing system centred at a very narrow zone around the leading edge with a discontinuous thermal de-icer further downstream. With this concept complete melting or evaporization of the accreted ice is no longer necessary. A crucial point in this approach is that ice-shedding from the surface works reliably and by applying as little thermal energy as possible.

In the IceDrip project the coupling of the thermal ice protection system with (super)hydrophobic surface coatings is investigated. It is anticipated that this combination increases significantly the energy efficiency and reliability of the ice protection system.
