First institute for icing sciences in Austria
In close cooperation with the JOANNEUM University of Applied Sciences, the Austrian Institute for Icing Sciences AIIS was founded in 2016. The goal is the planning and implementation of controlled icing tests and their documentation to support the certification process in the icing wind tunnel.
High-precision 3D scanning and 3D printing technologies are used for research activities in the field of icing sciences, focusing on icing phenomena during flight and their effects on the aerodynamics of aircraft, helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles.
For its work on artificial ice structures, the AIIS was nominated for the State Prize for Mobility 2017. NASA also holds the outstanding expertise of AIIS in high regard; the two organizations have been working together since the foundation of the latter.
